Portakabin Lilliput Scores A Century

Portakabin has once again proved its expertise in creating high quality environments with the sale of its 100th Lilliput building, a nursery facility designed around the needs of children.

Designed in conjunction with award winning nursery and primary school architects, Cottrell & Vermeulen, and early years consultant Mark Dudek, the Lilliput building was launched on the market eight years ago.

Following the initial introduction of Sure Start Local Programmes, Neighbourhood Nurseries and Early Excellence Centres, the government introduced its Sure Start Children’s Centres initiative. The idea behind all these schemes was to ensure that families from all social backgrounds have access to childcare and family support.

Designed to build on the success of the earlier projects, the Children’s Centre initiative aims to bring high quality integrated early years services to the heart of communities.

Lilliput: specifically designed for the Children’s Centre Initiative

Portakabin recognised the need for a modular building, specifically designed to provide Children’s Centre accommodation, that could be constructed and operational in a very short space of time.

Robert Hall, Business Development Manager for Education at Portakabin, said, ‘The introduction of the Sure Start Children’s Centre programme has placed heavy demands on local authorities to provide all the necessary services and facilities required, quickly.

‘The Lilliput Children’s Centre building is perfectly placed to address these pressures as it can be completed in less than half the time that it takes to build traditionally.

‘With more and more local authorities now making use of the government funding available to them through the Sure Start programme, we have definitely seen sales increase as a result. The fact that we have now provided our 100th Lilliput building is testament to how well the product has been received.’

The concept behind the Lilliput nursery building was to design an environment where children could learn, play and grow. The building reflects the latest thinking in nursery design and, whilst each one is designed on the same principles, they are all individually tailored to meet specific customer requirements.

100th Lilliput nursery delivered

The 100th Lilliput building has been procured by Sure Start Chilwell West & Eastwood in Nottingham and has been designed and built as a Children’s Centre. Sally Handley, Sure Start Programme Manager said, ‘We’ve been delivering Sure Start Local Programme services, as outlined by the government, for over two years, in the areas of Chilwell West and Eastwood. But, we didn’t have dedicated accommodation from which to do this.

Sure Start local programmes are area-based initiatives with the aim of improving the health and well-being of families and children from before birth to four, so children are ready to flourish when they go to school.

‘The new Portakabin Lilliput Children’s Centres have been a most welcome addition, enabling us to provide a first class service to the local community from excellent quality facilities.’

The 100th Lilliput building is the Children’s Centre at Eastwood, which is actually situated in the grounds of Brookhill Leys Primary and Nursery School.

The Children’s Centre offers a range of services and activities including child and family health services, antenatal and post-natal support and parental outreach, educational and creative early learning actitivites for children and families to share.

In addition it provides family support and outreach, support for children and their parents who may have special needs, and effective links with Jobcentre Plus to help parents and carers who wish to consider training or employment.

The Chilwell Children’s Centre is linked to Sunnyside Primary and Nursery School. The Portakabin Lilliput building is connected to the school by an internal door. As well as offering similar services as the Eastwood centre Chilwell will also provide a range of day care options from a private provider.

Sally continued, ‘The design and layout of the Children’s Centres offer child friendly features, such as the children’s toilets and low level windows which are great.

‘I’m sure that our Children’s Centres will provide a valued, accessible and child friendly environment. The Portakabin Lilliput buildings provide a practical and realistic capital project solution for Children’s Centre accommodation.’
