Yorkon receives 2nd commendation for work on site in just 6 weeks

Off-site construction specialist and Portakabin subsidiary, Yorkon, has achieved its second Considerate Constructors ‘Performance Beyond Compliance’ certification in just six weeks.

This latest commendation is for the construction of a new NHS treatment centre in Bristol – believed to be the UK’s largest complete hospital to be built off site.

The Emerson’s Green NHS Treatment Centre for independent healthcare providers, UK Specialist Hospitals (UKSH) was manufactured at the Yorkon production centre in York and was craned into position earlier this year for the final stages of fitting out.

The Considerate Constructors Scheme assesses site operations across the UK in areas such as environment, site cleanliness, safety, responsibility, respect and accountability.

Following two visits to site, Yorkon was awarded a certificate of ‘Performance Beyond Compliance’, achieving a score of 84 per cent, which exceeds UK industry averages of 75 per cent.

The Yorkon site team was commended for its ‘positive and proactive attitude’, its communications with adjacent properties, energy and water consumption monitoring and conservation initiatives, waste segregation for recycling, site welfare facilities and its good neighbour policy.

Yorkon has also recently been awarded ‘Performance Beyond Compliance’ certification for its construction of a new primary school in Wales.

Due to open towards the end of 2009, the Emerson’s Green NHS Treatment Centre is a new purpose-designed 4,842 sqm surgical hospital which will provide a range of elective surgical services, including inpatient treatment.

The three-storey building comprises 114 steel modules up to 14m long, which Yorkon craned into position in just three weeks to reduce disruption and the build time.  The off-site approach will also ensure completion on time, on budget and with improved quality.

The treatment centre is designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘very good’ rating and will feature services monitoring, water conservation devices and solar shading, and a sustainable green roof to the adjacent service building.  Externally it will be clad in horizontal cedar cladding with areas of terracotta to contrast with the white steel modules and the glazed atrium.

Facilities in the new treatment centre will include four operating theatres with recovery bays, central sterilisation unit, minor operations room, endoscopy suite, diagnostics and x-ray, 33 inpatient beds, procedure and consulting rooms, waiting area, reception, café, pharmacy, physiotherapy and administration centre .
